Meet Dr. Sarah Thompson, a recent PhD at Swansea University (congrats!) who has done some amazing pioneering work on Ngozumpa, from which the current project (iSpy) takes its inspiration. Her research combined ground based mapping and sonar surveys, aerial photographs and satellite imagery to investigate the early stages of moraine-dammed lake development. On Ngozumpa, a recently formed lake (informally named Spillway), located behind the terminal moraine was the focus of her investigation. Lake area was determined from 1984 to 2010 using a variety of remote sensing classification techniques and dGPS field mapping. This field season (2012), repeat surveys will be made to determine how much the lake has further grown and deepened since the last field measurements.
